Ashby Mill was built in 1816 when Brixton Hill was still open fields but fell into disuse by 1935. Now, Friends of Windmill Gardens aim to restore the windmill and develop the surrounding park.

We designed ‘future proof’ planting schemes for the park, using ornamental grasses to evoke the corn and barley once milled at the site. Colourful ‘ribbons’ of nectar-rich perennial plants will create a rich tapestry, attracting bees, butterflies and other wildlife.

No pesticides or chemicals will be needed and the primary maintenance will be a cut back to ground level each spring. We worked with local residents, Ash Sakula and Lambeth Council on the project. An application for a £2,000,000 grant has been submitted to he Heritage Lottery Fund.
